Number Crunchers is GamesArsenal’s classroom math-muncher: a 6-by-5 board, a rule at the top, and Troggles that will eat you if you hesitate. It is a free original HTML5 canvas game on this site, not a licensed classroom ROM. High score per mode lives in this browser. Open the grid in the cabinet above; this page is the field manual.

Controls

Arrows or WASD hop one cell. Space or Enter crunches the square you stand on. 1–4 pick a mode from the title. P or Escape pauses; M mutes. On a phone, swipe the board to hop and tap CRUNCH. Eat every cell that matches the rule — multiples, factors, primes, or expressions that equal the target. A wrong crunch costs a life. Three lives. Clear the valid cells to climb a level; Troggles spawn faster as you go.

Background

School-lab math cabinets taught a generation that a number is a tile and a rule is a filter. This cabinet locks a 960-by-720 view (4-by-3): six columns, five rows, four modes, and Troggles that hop the same grid. Multiples, factors, primes, and equality rotate a target as levels climb. A correct munch is 100; a clear is 500 plus a speed bonus. High scores save per mode in localStorage under this origin. The file is self-contained so GamesArsenal can iframe it without a build step.

Review

The draw is NES-sky blue, brick gold, and a rule you can read before you hop. Keyboard hop-and-crunch is the precision tool. Swipe plus CRUNCH is fair if thumbs stay off the mute hit. Four modes are a short lesson, not a textbook. It will not replace a dedicated classroom PCB with a teacher key. It will replace the five-minute tab you meant to close before a Troggle tagged you.

Strategy

Read the rule, then scan for safe hops — a wrong crunch is a life, not a retry. Clear corners first so Troggles cannot pin you against a wall. Skip bait numbers that look close but fail the filter. On equality, compute before you crunch; on primes, trust 2 and 3 and doubt the even rest. Continues are a tap retry, not a rewarded extra life. Levels are the trophy; leftover lives are how careful you were.
